Bill Melloh came to this district in 1966 as a Physical Education teacher, Head Track & Field coach and 9th grade Basketball coach at Trenton. He helped to revive the Trenton Football program after a 20+ year hiatus and went on to be the JV Basketball and JV Football coach when the schools consolidated to become Edgewood. In all, he has coached nearly 100 sports teams in his career.
It is as a Track & Field and Cross Country coach, however, that Bill really excelled. He coached 68 varsity seasons of Track & Field and Cross Country, producing over 100 State qualifiers. He recently completed his 47th year of coaching Track & Field. He was instrumental in planning and implementing an all-weather track at Edgewood, one of the first high schools to have one. Bill led the Track team to five straight Mid Miami League titles from 1972-1976, the only sport at Edgewood to win a league title during that time. Even when there were not exceptional athletes to coach, Bill encouraged each athlete to set a personal goal and surpass it prior to the end of the season. Bill is also a coach of people, leading committees in Homecoming and Prom planning. He sums it up best when saying, "These kids don't take my energy, they give it." |
